What do reputable breeders want to know about PPO's?

What are you looking for? When they fill out your questionnaire, what are the key things you look for?

Experience they have with dogs? What their goals are? Do you sell show pups to someone with no experience in showing? What do you base the price of the pup on? Do you want the PPO to keep in touch with you? Call you if there are any problems/issues that come up with the pup?

What do reputable breeders want to know about PPO's?
I want to know EVERYTHING.

HONESTY is crucial... and I'd rather have an open discussion about issues than to have someone try to tell me what they think I want to hear... I catch that stuff. I'd rather problem solve issues than anything else.

I want to know that I've picked the right home for the right puppy. (One of the best placings I ever did was a rescued adult Sam to a person living in a townhouse.... the dog was an escape artist who climbed fences and the townhouse owner HAD to keep her on a leash, had great references and was a runner so the dog would get LOADS of exercise).

*I* want as much contact with the puppy owner as they feel comfortable with. Some want to talk to me weekly/daily... others merely want to send me the required (in the contract) yearly photo and let me know all is still well. I ENCOURAGE contact but don't demand it. Yes, I absolutely want the new owner to phone me IMMEDIATELY if there are issues of any kind... just as *I* phoned the breeder of my first Bernese when he had recurrent diarrhea we couldn't get diagnosed and she encouraged us to do exploratory surgery where we found 2 squeakers that NEVER showed up on X-ray.. Her advice was invaluable.. and SHE is an expert in the breed.

Yes, I've sold to people with little to no show experience. In that case I really do require a LOT more contact as I have to be comfortable that the person is safe to have an intact dog. A very good friend of mine got burned badly once and I learned from it.

Yes, I want to know about their experience.. as well as their problem solving skills. I want to know that they are dedicated to their animals. I am FAR more concerned about the life as a pet of the dog than I am about any show career... and personally, I value titles in working venues MORE than conformation titles.

The price of all my pups is the same... whether for pet or show and is the median price of pups of similar pedigree nation wide. There are cheaper pups and more expensive ones. I have, on occassion, done payment plans on pups when I felt that specific home was the best for the dog.
Reply:hahaha would have never thought of that! haha I work in healthcare and that is a type of insurance! haha My perspective is they are first a potential NOT puppy getter! hahaha Gotta prove to me in a lot of ways that they deserve one of my pups... or even a dog in the first place! Report Abuse

Reply:I actually have no clue what a 'PPO' is... thought it was some sort of insurance thing?? hahaha I will say that I have never done questionnaires and don't know many breeders that do since WE question anyone interested in any one of our dogs and it is extensive and yes, we do keep in touch with any of our puppy owners, forever. My puppy owners contact me with ANY issue or just to tell me about how they are doing, the pups or them as both are important to me since if they aren't doing well, then there might be some impending change in my pup's life. I have owners of my 'pups' from ten plus years ago that I am in frequent contact with and always have been... actually got to go to California to visit with one of my pups and then one of the people with a pup from ten years ago was traveling from NC to there and we met up for a visit! It was very nice to see her again and to know how my old pup was doing. Anyone who has one of my pups know that can and NEED to contact me with any and all concerns or even just to fill me in on stuff ... throughout the dog's life (and even beyond). I have sold show quality to pet homes but basically I usually place pup in a home that would be ameanable to me showing the dog if it turned out AND if it was okay with them... this has worked out well and continues to... of course I don't produce many litters at all since I see no reason to just make puppies and would rather have a litter every few years than to just make a lot of pups and hope a few turn out. I don't base my prices on much - - usually around the price of the stud fees which are usually around $1000 - 2000 (which has over the years usually reflected the price for a pet quality pup). But I am usually pretty flexible with that since I am not concerned with making money off of my pups but there needs to be a certain level of capability to afford to properly care for a dog... Again, my primary concern is that the dog be in the right home and if for some reason they can't remain their, owner illness or something like that, I have the capability and will automatically take the dog back as it is my responsibility for life. Experience with dogs is pretty important in my book -- at least the experience you have had with regards to caring for and properly interacting/training one -- not necessarily show experience - I know a lot of experienced show homes I wouldn't place a dead rat with!

What I am always looking for when I place a pup is a home that knows what they are getting into and that I can and do establish a strong relationship with before deciding if they can have one of my dogs... they need to have evidenced their capabilities either to me or that I can check on and no, vet references and all that stuff really doesn't pull a lot of weight as I know people whose vets will give them a great reference that are already back yard greeders and puppy millers...

Oh yeah, co-ownership on all puppies and strong contracts that both parties agree upon completely.
Reply:Most reputable breeders are looking for someone who will give the puppy time and love, have a safe home and will do their best at being a loving, stable and permanent home. If the breeder wants the dog shown, these stipulations should be understood before taking the puppy home...a contract agreement is more than likely required. The puppy's price is usually based on the quality of the parents, what the parents have produced and what the average price is for that breed in the area in which the puppy is purchased. Most reputable breeders appreciate the new owner to keep in touch and to call with any questions or problems.
Reply:1. They need to have done research on, or previously owned the breed. They need to understand what they're getting into.

2. Among the questions In my questionnaire, I ask:

* If they have a fenced in yard (A MUST)

* If they intend to take obedience classes with their puppy

* If they intend to spay or neuter (A MUST)

* Who their veterinarian is

I also do a home check.

3. My puppies are all the same price, regardless of sex or color. I offer a $50 rebate upon proof of spay/neuter.

4. I do not sell show puppies. I may have more than 1 show-quality puppy in the litter, but everything I don't keep is placed in a pet home on a spay/neuter contract, unless I co-own it with another breeder/exhibitor-friend that I know and trust. In that case, no money is ever exchanged.

5. I strongly encourage my puppy buyers to keep in contact with me, especially in the first year. They can call with diet or training questions, behavior issues, concerns, vet issues, anything. I definitely want pictures of how the puppy grows up.

I will also board the dog if the owners go out of town -- we get taken up on that offer a lot!

My puppies are sold with a genetic health guarantee, so I certainly expect my puppy people to contact me if something ever goes wrong, there.

And I expect them to contact me if they cannot keep the dog -- the dog comes back to me, regardless of age.
Reply:Looking for people WITH A CLUE!!!

They have to like drool.

They have to like hair everywhere.

All of my pups are the same price, pet or show. Sometimes there is not a show home available, so it goes to a pet home.

The people SHOULD keep in touch. MOST do. Most will call with questions.

I look for people that have done SOME homework on theri own. I am WAAYY past the calls when they want to know everything about the breed. If they cannot tell me a lot of stuff about them, they can come back later after they have done some research.

I have sold show pups to people with no show experience. Co-ownership on ALL show pups!!!! Limited reg for all pets.
Reply:Some questions I ask puppy buyers are,

fenced yard?

What is families situation, stay at home?

Ages of children.

References, from a vet and place where they got the last dog they had.

I require that they let me or a trusted colleague do a home visit.

They sign a contract that states that if they can't keep the puppy, for any reason, as long as it lives, they will not take it to a rescue, shelter or give it to anyone, it comes back to me.

I try to put the right puppy in the right home, a quiet, shy female is not going to do well in a home with 6 teenagers!

An older couple will not be happy with a rambunctious male.

If I am selling a show puppy, it goes on a co-ownership till it finishes it's Championship and, if they are going to breed, my name stays on till I am satisfied that they have learned enough about care, whelping, and genetics to make me comfortable.

I am there for the life of the dog, if the owners have any questions, concerns or anything, I am available.

This is the minimum standard I have set for myself and I will NOT compromise.
Reply:Health Care???
Reply:1- first have you ever shown a dog, if so, what breed, what was the outcome with the dog...champion???

2-Have you ever owned a Miniature Schnauzer??

3-Are there any children in the home, if so what age, and will the dog be kept in a kennel, yard or in the home only.

4-I keep track of the pups I sell for all their life.....I make sure they are happy and healthy.....

5-Price of the pup, depends, male or female, good, excellent or gonna be a terrific show aspect.......

6-I always want to know if they have problems with the pup, but thus far, some alittle longer to house train, but most of my show pups, are house trained before I let them go to homes..I like to have my pups set up and ready to go, all puppy shots, ears, tails, dewclaws, and worming, and already on Heart-guard Plus for life..I even furnish the first 6 mos of Heart-guard for the new owner to take home.

Last but not least, if never owned or shown a Min. Schnauzer, then its no sale, for any amount of money....My dogs are not for sale to anyone that thinks they can just begin showing...I sell to alot of Jr,. Handlers, but have had at least 2 yrs in the ring........I am always pleased with whom I place my dogs with.

Breeder/show/handler 14 yrs...and proud of it..

And I deliver my pups, but I hardly ever ship, unless previous buyer,,,,,,I always visit the home of the new owner/Jr Handler, before money is discussed.....In very rare cases I will help get a new handler/onwer trained for showing, and I will attend shows with the new owner......
Reply:A reputable breeder is looking to place their pup in the best possible home. My Pyrenees was from an excellent breeder, and was sold to me on a contract that I was to show my boy. I had no showing experience, but I attended the breed club meeting regularly, and I stopped by her house to learn almost constantly. I kept in touch the whole way, mostly to get tons of help!! And I would def call if anything happened with my boy to let her know, she can only improve on her breeding stock by keeping in touch with the puppy owners.
