Pica (the desire to eat items with no nutritional value) is also a symptom of anaemia.

I'm severely anaemic and have urges to lick porcelain, china and glass. I found myself doing this absentmindedly on several occasions before starting ferrous sulphate.

Where there is no medical reason for this, it can be classed as a mental disorder.

Reply:Theres a mental disorder called pica that causes cravings for non-nutritional substances such as clay or candlewax. It occurs largely in children, but can affect adults. In the book "Running with scissors" his mother is depicted as eating blocks of candlewax during her "episodes".
