Does this hurt one from being a potential candidate for a job? After submitting resumes on websites, typically the questionnaire about my nationality comes up. I'm an African American male, and I've always stated that when asked. Is it best I don't and just choose the "i prefer not to say" option?
Should I state my nationality when applying online for jobs?
I'm white and I find that question offensive. Are they looking for a particular nationality? What difference does it make? I just feel it shouldn't even come up. A definite no.
Reply:Society can be racist towards African Americans, Arab Americans, and when it gets down to it, everyone CAN be a victim of racism. I think you should be proud of where you come from, if you don't get a job because of where you come from, shame on them. I think you should say where you are from.
Reply:If you "prefer not to say" they may "prefer to to hire". Just tell them, and don't worry, not everyone judges people by their race, and those that would, well, you don't wanna work for them anyway.
Reply:This is really a matter of personal choice. There is no legal requirement that you disclose your ethnicity or nationality before accepting employment. However, the info that is being collected is for purposes of affirmative action. Companies that are underutilized in one or more ethnic/gender categories may find you a MORE appealing candidate because of your nationality if they are looking to improve their AAP statistics.
Reply:I think that sucks! Why do they even have that question? They keep claiming we're equal, yet they ask sh** like that. I agree with the one guy. You should be proud of who you are and if they ask that question you should answer honestly. They're really not worth working for if they chose not to hire you due to how you answer that question.
Reply:no, because being black can hurt your job
